Department of Physics
The Department of Physics was established in the 1977–1978 academic year within the Faculty of Science under the name Department of Physics Engineering. Following subsequent regulatory changes, it continued its academic activities as the Department of Physics within the same faculty. In accordance with the Council of Ministers Decision No. 2010/175, the Faculty of Science and Letters of Fırat University was dissolved, and two separate faculties—the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences—were established. Consequently, all academic units previously affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Letters were restructured and transferred to the Faculty of Science under Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, as amended by Law No. 2880.
The Department of Physics occupies a strong position in the fundamental sciences, supported by a distinguished academic staff, a high level of scientific research output with international visibility, and an advanced research infrastructure. Currently, the department employs a total of 23 academic personnel, including 13 professors, 4 associate professors, 1 assistant professor, and 5 research assistants, along with 2 administrative staff members. Research conducted within the department is published in reputable journals indexed in Q1, Q2, and Q3 categories, contributing to scientific advancement at both the national and international levels.
The department provides contemporary education at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels in both theoretical and experimental physics, equipping students with a robust culture of scientific research and innovative analytical skills. It remains committed to training future researchers and scientists who will shape the development of the fundamental sciences.
